La Tammurriata

Connect to the cult of Mary, the Tammurriata originated as a dance performed at Sacred festivals dedicated to the Virgin Mary (the Madonna). There are 7 main festivals dedicated to the Madonna in the Campania region of Italy, at each festival you dance a Tammurriata. There are 5 main types of music and dance. Some of the most popular festivals include the Madonna di Montevergine in Avellino, the Madonna dei Bagni in Salerno, the Madonna dellArco, Napoli, the Madonna Delle Gallinein Pagani, the Madonna di Villa di Briano in Caserta and the Madonna dellAvvocata in Maiori.

The singer, tammorra player (large frame drum player), and the dancers create the "tammurriata", a term which can also be refered to as ball ngopp o tambur, a dance on the tamburello.
