Demonstration of the use of a Mirror Box as a therapeutic device to treat phantom limb pain experienced by a young Mexican American farm worker . This fine young man lost his right leg up to his hip while adjusting a bale in a piece of hay shredding equipment. He is the sole survivor from all such accidents. His survival was mainly due to his quick thinking, super human strength, and sheer determination to stay alive. At the Mayo clinic after four operations he experienced a total hip disarticulation. He is a true hero able to live to tell the story of his horrific accident.

When he entered the box with his left leg, he was experiencing phantom limb pain 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 and cramps in his missing foot because it was contracted to the left. Within less than a minute of entering the box the pain was gone and all he felt was like hormigas [ants] crawling on his ankle of his missing leg.

I stopped the video, massaged his ankle, foot, and calf for five minutes then he proceeded with his exercises...started the video up again and even the hormigas had left and the contraction in his missing foot had relaxed and was back to a normal relaxed position....even though it was missing. The use of this box has been and continues to be a true miracle worker.

  • Seems to. Apparently helps the brain understand all the strange sensations it's getting from the limb that's not there anymore. There's a British neuroscientist, VS Ramachandran, who's done a lot of work on it. First time I've heard of it being used with a guy who's lost a leg tho, usually people who've lost an arm.

  • Esta llorando...?

  • Does it help !?!
