  • Built in the 13th century to cross the River Trent and its surrounding marshes, Swarkestone Bridge is the longest stone bridge in England. Well worth a visit if you live nearby. I drove over it twice today. It's long and narrow, and a bit scary at 40 mph. Apparently, the advance guard of Bonnie Prince Charlie's army reached the bridge in 1745 before withdrawing to Scotland.
