The Nahr el Bared Palestinian refugee camp in North Lebanon. Still in ruins almost two years after a brutal four-month battle between the Lebanese Army and Islamic militants holed up inside. Tens of thousands of camp inhabitants were forced to flee. Slowly they are trickling back trying to pick up their livelihoods amid the rubble.
Among them Adham a young fisherman.
ADHAM SHOT I
The battle started and we had to flee the camp. We stopped work . Then we came back to live in barracks.
Defying hardship Adham paddles out to sea in the early morning to cast his fishing nets reclaiming a routine interrupted by the unpredictability of war.
These nets are new. Adhams old ones were destroyed during the fighting. He found them lying torn on the beach. The future looked bleak. But amid grim disappointment there was a ray of hope
ADHAM SHOT II
My friend told me about a net and he lent it to me, and I started to fish again, and then I applied to the womens union which gave me a net.
A good deed made possible through funds supplied by the Humanitarian Aid department of the European Commission in Lebanon to an OXFAM project in partnership with the Palestinian Arab Women League (PAWL).

Pierre-Yves Scotto, Head of ECHO office in Lebanon.
We have looked for the people who were doing something before and who wanted to start again and we have provided them with the means so that they can again have an activity. So the fisherman we provided him with a net, a wetsuit and he was able to go back fishing.
A welcome return to earning a family living.
Not only fishermen have benefited from the ECHO Economic Recovery program in Nahr el Bared.

Were also helping some other kind of people like weve got some hairdressers, weve got some painters, weve got somebody who has a mechanical workshop. So we try to assist all kind of activities for people who have the potential to restart.
In a camp that is home to 30,000 impoverished inhabitants where earning a meager daily income can be a seemingly impossible struggle especially for those whose livelihoods disintegrated along with the buildings under the bombs the European Commissions humanitarian program is like a lifebelt thrown to the occupants of a ship in danger of sinking.
A particularly poignant reality for ADham who lives with his large family in cramped quarters.
ADHAM SHOT III
Our family is nine people. My father doesnt make a lot of money so I support them. ECHO gave me a net and now I can work, Thank God.
For Adham life in the ruins of post-war Nahr el Bared refugee camp still feels like swimming against the current. But thanks to the lifeline thrown by the European Commission on the horizon there is also hope.

  • Dear Lebneneh Saleh, This was simply part of the Humanitarian Aid 'Cash For Work' projects that was provided to the vulnerable Palistinians as a mean of support for them to catch back on their work, regain their livelihood, and ensure a minimum income and independence to survive after the crisis. Many other movements and parties are advocating for the issues you mention in your comment. Support to the victims in all its kind is positive - one does not stop the other.

  • Giving a net to help a Palestinian refugee fish in Lebanese waters is not the job of the UN. If some bored French people want to do something to those Palestinians, I SUGGEST THEY LOBBY WITH THEIR GOVERNMENT TO TAKE ALL 600,000 PALESTINIANS FROM LEBANON AND PUT THEM IN FRANCE, THE 16EME ARRONDISSEMENT CAN BE A GREAT LOCATION FOR NAHR EL BARED II. OR THEY CAN LOBBY WITH THEIR GOVERNMENT TO SEND THOSE PALESTINIANS BACK TO THEIR COUNTRY, PALESTINE. LEBANON IS NOT AN OPEN LAND IS FRANCE OPEN?!?!
