Actually, black leather is NOT the way to go on the west coast - they're too heavy for brush (wildfire) operations. LA County firefighters have the option of black leather helmets and those who consider themselves "smoke eaters" often opt for them.

I'm from Arizona, planning to move to LA. Do you know if you can apply to LAFD (when hiring) to be able to get an opportunity to work for them. Or do you need to be a California resident with ID only? Please let me know if you have that info.

@lazona1233 Gotta have a California Driver's License and pass an extensive background check (takes nearly a year to complete). Next hiring phase will likely begin next year.

@uscgswimmer1 LAFD helmets are not new (firefighting). USAR helmets (and CERT) helmets (also not new) do look like wildfire head protection.
