So the explosion in the end is from burning hydrogen, liquid potasium in contact with water, or solid but hot postasium touching water?

And what would happen if you took piece of potasium and tied it with a steel band (rubberbands would melt and not hold) to a block of steel to weigh it down and trow it into a deeper bowl of water so at no point was the metal in contact with air (no oxygen to burn)? Would it still explode from reacting with water? Or would it just act as an H gas generator?

The potassium would melt, flow out of the steel band, and float on the surface, likely to explode.

If potassium is still under water, it is still liable to explode, especially if the pieces are large (cesium, of course, explodes violently under water, but small amounts of sodium and lithium act as steady H gas generator).
