http://www.literacybuildscommunities.ca/ Literacy can be a major determinant of health. Health literacy is the ability to access, understand, evaluate and communicate information as a way to promote, maintain and improve health in a variety of settings across the life course. Literacy is also associated with other socio-economic conditions that influence health, such as income, employment opportunities, social support, early childhood development and culture. Canadians with limited literacy skills are more likely to have poorer health, higher rates of chronic disease, and less knowledge of disease management and behaviours that promote good health. http://www.2010LegaciesNow.com
