The great thing about this video is that it shows a transition time in racing. Most of the cars have Offy engines. Thee engine to have since the 40's. A couple have small block Chevy's. The engine that continues to dominate even today. A few, including the winner Al Unser, have a 4 cam Ford engine. Not to mention that a few roll cages were in the mix.

I was only about 18 months old, but I lived about 2 blocks away. I was probably wondering what all the noise was, and when my dad was getting home, because I'm sure he was there. He started taking me in 1974 and I've been going ever since. Thanks for posting this video. It is truly pure American motorsports at it's best.

MERIL bentenhousen lost his arm in a indy car crash at michigan speedway in 1972 and he stilled race for years ..

@mmb33541 and there would no wings or ground effects and the engines would up in front.Essentially,IndyCar would properly reconnect with the traditional feeder systems that made it great.Right now,all the IRL is is a dead end,3rd rate, rear engine, formula car road racing series that is full of no name, nondescript drivers no one cares about!

Glorious. Were I to rule the circuit, IndyCars would be back at Springfield, Duquoin and...Syracuse....

1970, the last year of roll cage optional,

75 gallons of fuel, hard tires on an extremely muddy track. Do the math.

If you were sitting in one you'd have a different opinion. 100+ MPH in an open cockpit driving the car hard into a corner and you have to push yourself and the car to the limit because that's what the leaders are going to do, with g-forces against your body and head in the corners.
