Sharon Keane, owner and head massage therapist of Equine BodyWork, massages a horse at Drakes Town Equestrian in Long Valley, NJ. There are many benefits to using massage with horses including initial muscle tension, break up adhesions and allows the horse's muscles to restore their natural elasticity.
It depends on the horse... Some prefer the cupped hand percussion. this makes a "slapping" noise. The idea is to bring circulation to the area so the body can heal itself. Don't forget this video was edited by a person who has no idea about equine massage. It was done by NJ.com not the massage therapist.

People get "slapped" during massage techniques... although not really slapped, you know... sometimes it gets blood flowing. not sure why it 's used here becuz I'm not an Equine Massage Therapist

I think in AZ you need to be certified massage therapy working on people first before taking Equine Massage. I am looking at human massage therapy school and would love to take animal massage training later

unless you are certified for massage therapy I don't think people should be leaving negative comments. You have no clue how to do it. I honestly don't either but how do I know if she is doing this right or wrong.

I agree with everything you say here, except, I do not think the slapping is good for them, do you like to be slapped? It causes tension, patting has been proven to be annoying and to cause more stress. You should avoid that.
