Mel and Grace discuss the pragmatics of "auntie" in Malaysia, 28 July 2011.
--ah - has many functions, including marking questions or doubt, expressing a reason, or pointing out something obvious.
--auntie 'common phrase used to address older women politely. Not polite when used on younger women'
--aiyoh - exclamation approximately equivalent to 'oh dear'.
--got - here functions as a past tense marker. Compare Malay kamu ada beli ke tak and Cantonese lei yao mai mo, both literally "You got buy or not?".
--lah - here used to emphasize a statement.
--leng chai 'pretty boy' - used to refer to a handsome male.
--leng lui 'pretty girl'--a common phrase used to address young girls.
--pasar malam - a market in Malaysia, literally 'market night'
--uncle - in this context means 'lecherous old man'

  • @yezill Of cos!We are multicultural and multilingual.

  • @huangmonkey same same lah~

  • i cannot tell the diff leh btw singlish accent and manglish accent

  • @yezill In a loose sense of the term, yea. Newcomers take a little while to get used to it as it's different to other English dialects, i.e. Malaysian colloquial English has some unique words alongside loan words and the syntax has minor differences to British English. Malaysian "Standard" English is very similar to British English, but most ppl. use colloquial, which is v. similar to S'porean colloquial "Singlish". Malay, Tamil and Chinese dialects are also spoken. Official lang. is Malay.

  • just curious, ppl in Malaysia speak English?

  • my company outsourced parts of my role to KL. and I hear this accent everyday in phone conf or concall as they and even in messenger. I'm quite fond of the accent now though I have to ask them to slow down half the time. Thanks Aunties :)
