My Pet Black Widow Spider

Much thanks to Costco for providing me with a free pet Black Widow Spider, a bonus gift in my grapes. She has doubled in size with a steady diet of crickets and household pests. My goal is to grow her as much as possible for my entertainment purposes. All because I miss my Einie!

@Celcana and only the females have the potential to kill. I dont think there has been a death recorded with anti venom as treatment. but alas widow anti venom is illegal in the US....

I save Widows all the time in the back yard, if I am easily able to. I just put them on a stick or in a glass/cup and throw them in the field across the street. Very rarely do I kill them. (if they are inside and not easily catchable or in a place that I have to stick my hands in-the sprinkler system, etc.

Who's Einie? There's another video (at least it was there last time I looked a while back) of a guy who has a Widow he lets crawl all over him! It doesn't bite since there's no threat to it.

@Celcana Black widows make great pets if u care for them responsibly however they can kill you and although u could easily get antivenom and not die if it were to bite you, but with out treat ment it will kill you. I know this because i own more than130 reptiles and plenty of spiders and scorpions.

I caught a very large female Black Widow in my garage this spring and had to keep her as proof of infestation, at night they were everywhere, and housing wouldn't send an exterminator w/o proof. What I didn't expect was to develop such a fondness for her, she is like black shiny jewelry, timid, elegant and easy to please. Watching her web weave is fascinating, she makes you look past all the neurotoxin venom and such.

I worked as an interpreter at a nature center over the summer. Someone also found a black widow in their costco grapes and brought it into my work. It was immature, so the person didn't realize it was a black widow. I decided to keep it as a pet, and now about 8 months later, I still have her, and she is one of the coolest pets I've ever had.

Looks like a shed spider skin up top and a centipede below who may pose a death threat for the widow spider. I've seen small Scutigera centipedes take out larger spiders in a flash. Scolopendra centipedes have almost taken me out with painful bites.
