In 1985, C3424 suffered a major motor fire resulting in passenger injuries. All four Sydney TV networks covered the incident. It was this single incident which resulted in the commencement of the "Redfern Overhaul" scheme where over 350 "Red Rattler" motors were rewound and rebuilt during the late '80s before the trains were finally retired in 1992.

  • the motor that blow up would have been silping on the rail and selfdestucted.!

  • nup. The official report found that the banding on the rotor failed. When it did, the contents of the motor were chopped up and sucked through by the fan. Because the brush cover was missing, the shrapnel made its way out into the world.

  • Is that Kaye Browne from Southern Cross Nightly News Tasmania?

  • We're talking 1985 here. I'm sure "Kaye Brown" has had a long history of media re0porting since that time, one that probably landfs her in Tassie at this time.

  • But where is the list?

  • It was published in one of SETS' Under the Wires a number of years ago, not sure which one.

  • Sydney's trains, dont you just love 'em! A bloody joke! Compare this to the 1930's, & its like two different worlds! Thanks to decades of NSW Governments listening to all the Rockeffeller oil robber barrons & the road lobby!

  • Nothing has changed much since then! We have a state government completely broke & needing the feds to bail 'em out! No investment in railways for decades! No wonder everyone drives! Would you catch this train? Or any train even today! Malaysia, Singapore & Japan pee all over us, as we stay stuick in 1955! Trains that stop mid- journey between stations because of constant signal failures! The state govt cant even provide the basics, forget the hard stuff!

  • My God! What a 3rd world rail system! This happened at the time of Neville Wran! He was all talk & show for the cameras & the public, while he jacked himself off under the parliament tables! He opened the line to Bondi! BIG FUCKEN WOOP! That was it! That had already been delayed for 40 years anyway! Nothing much! Dont worry about the Sydneysiders, theyre second class citizens!

  • That was Sydney 1985! When the station seats were these old, orange slats & not bolted to the platforms, there were poor signs or no signs, & the whole network was in 3rd World condition! After 50 years of sheer neglect thanks to our politicians, both Labor & Liberal! Robert Askin pocketed vast amounts of drug money, Neville Wran cut the Eastern Subs Line back to Bondi Junct. only, Barry Unsworth didnt do much, & today, 2009, we have them sleeping in state parliament! Literally nodding off!

  • That was Sydney's rail system in the '70s & '80s! Like Angola's! And it hasnt improved that much since then! The SRA actually patronised the public with ads like "when you ride the Sydney System, you're up there with the best!" Oh, please! I'd like to see what the worst is! This is how Granville happened! Savage cutbacks to investment, blatant neglect to the tracks & trains to keep the oil lobby happy! You shouldve seen Pippita station in 1985! Like Nagasaki!

  • Trains with no doors? Cool!

  • no one died, i hope.....

  • In the late 70's I was sitting on Lidcombe station waiting for a citybound red rattler and a Penrith bound red rattler limped into the station amidst a huge pall of noxious smelling smoke .Immediatly upon coming to a screeching halt, the trains middle resistor banks exploded and caught fire.A piece of shrapnel almost hit me.

It was a scary event, and it happened about 7 metres from where i was sitting.

    Thank god nobody got hurt!

I wonder if it was the same train?
