Richard's comments on "Ordinary Fool" -- "Karen and I recorded it in 1976 while working on our "A Kind Of Hush" album. Originally it was recorded the way we did virtually all our recordings, bass, piano, drums and a "work lead" so, as you know, the drummer and bassist could hear the melody while reading their charts. Karen was not that taken with the song and it did not make the album."

Ordinary Fool
(Words and music by Paul Williams)

Only a fool...
Like fools before me,
I always think with my heart.
Only a fool...
That same old story.
Seems I was born for the part.

It's a lesson to be learned,
and a page I should have turned.
I shouldn't cry, but I do,
Like an ordinary fool
when his ordinary dreams fall through.

How many times
have I mistaken
good looks and laughs for bad news?
And how many times
have I mistaken
good looks and laughs for the blues?

When a road I've walked before
ends alone at my front door,
I shouldn't cry, but I do,
like an ordinary fool,
when his ordinary dreams fall through.

When a road I've walked before
ends alone at my front door,
I shouldn't cry, but I do,
like an ordinary fool,
when his ordinary dreams fall through.

  • sinto vergonha das minhas palavras para descrever essa canção letra arranjos e a voz maravilhosa de karen combinação perfeita do que chamamos de boa musica.

    antonio carlos da cruz.

  • A great, great melody with wonderful lyrics. Also covered by Mel Torme and Ella Fitzgerald...'nuff said.

  • :) x10,000

  • I find it interesting that as time went on, Karen seemed to like fewer and fewer of the songs they recorded . ("Solitaire," "The Rainbow Connection," a couple of others which they never wound up recording.) She was trying so hard to break away by this point and no longer seemed as willing to let Richard dictate every little thing they did.

  • I find it hard to believe that Karen didn't like the song...she sings it like she knows it, because she did. Of all of the songs Karen has sung, none has ever struck me as stark and as clear, as this one did. If anything, the finality the lyric suggests, that it's obviously time to change the idea of what you think "works" - 'when the road I've walked before...' time for the new road....which is what she tried to do....and everyone turned her around and said, "No, do what u know.." LV U Karen!

  • How could any singer since the beginning of time sing a song this incredibly? ONLY KAREN COULD! PERIOD.

  • this is a beautiful song and karen's vocals are lovely

  • May I dedicate this song to a very special person, who lives in my heart

    forever..............and ever.......

and there is no one on this planet who can change that

Never will anyone be able to sing this song the way Karen Carpenter did, and I thank her for that.

  • such a heartfelt and very very beautiful voice!!! Her vocals are so crystel clear and and she was so wonderful!!
