Arctic sea ice acts as a natural air conditioner that keeps the planet from overheating. But this ice, covering the northern most tip of our planet, is melting away more and more each summer, under the heat of global warming.

  • FAKE PROPAGANDA....

  • The only data that suggests that the current warming trend, since 1850, is unnatural is the proxy tree ring and proxy ice core isotope data. The malfeasence witht the tree ring data of the Mann "hockey stick" should be well known by now. Twelve trees make all the difference. The ice core proxies have no such scandals that I know of, but last I checked there are only 40 of them, hardly a sufficient data sample to reach the conclusions argued by the alarmists.

  • ice maps here confirmed elsewhere - obvious fact that Arctic is drastically reducing in size - yeah you probably want to deny that too - seems to me that many "denies" are likely to remain so even if the worst predicted scenarios are upon us!

  • More bull. This propaganda must be stopped. The Sun is the primary driver of the planet's climate. It is in an inactive period hence the Planet is now cooling abruptly.

  • oh noes.. the seasons.. i mean the bad humans made the ice melt!! oh noes!! we must save the world by inplementing a global co2 tax!! yay thats gonna save the world

  • Sig, both arguments for security and ecology have merit, and diferent people will respond to one or the other. I agree that cap & trade is not a good plan. It is far tooo exploitable. What America needs to do, for reason A or reason B is get the monkey called foreign oil off our backs. The USA needs to draft a decleration of energy independence. Wars always begin over control of resources and economics, been that way since day zero. By going green for either reason we can avoid a conflict.

  • Energy independence is a valid goal for security reasons that you mentioned but the gloabl warming alrmism has nothing to do with security. We have plenty of coal and natural gas but the alarmists don't want us to use coal because of the myth of agw. Cap and trade is a transfer of wealth from the west to the third world, and not it's people, but the dictators paid off not to develop their countries.

We need to act now to STOP COPENHAGEN.

  • It's a fact that Arctic ice is melting. It's also a fact that global temperatures have been declining for the last ten years. It's also a fact that polar bear populations are 5 times what they were 30 years ago. Their numbers increased LAST YEAR! Also, the antarctic, which holds over 80% of the world's ice, is GROWING. We are in a period of increased solar activity which is melting arctic ice. It is also melting the icecaps on Mars. This is not man made, and there is nothing we can do about it.

  • There are more trees in the United States today than ever before... EVER!!

  • Sig, The energy problem is, in the most simple terms, about the environment AND about national security. No energy, no production, no food, no water pumped to your home. Russia, Venezuela, Iran, among others, are all security risks to America because they control oil. How is becomming less dependent on energy resources that originate from places that want to see America fail a bad idea? Reducing pollution is just ONE aspect of the energy issue. The more immediate threat is energy security.

  • I can paint a window on my house black and it will have a warming effect, but it won't keep me warm in the winter.

There are valid reasons for curbing the importation of energy, but the alarmism isn't about helping people or the planet.

What we need is a dose of realism. Even using the IPCC models, the amount of co2 mitigation required to effect 1 C would require the complete shut down of modern society for 80 years assuming we can't magically replace all our energy needs with nukess et al
