The resettlement programme will continue unabated from today. 41,685 returned to their places or origin today. The Uthuru Wasanthaya Task Force said resettlement is taking place in the Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya and Mannar Districts.
The resettlement of the highest group of civilians who took shelter in Welfare Villages after being liberated from the terrorists, took place today. The activities took place under the guidance of Chief of the Uthuru Wasanthaya Task Force and Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa.
Mr. Raja[aksa said they belonged to 12,095 families from 110 Grama Niladhari Divisions of 10 Divisional Secretariat Divisions of four Districts in the North were resettled today. The Government is providing them the necessary facilities. He noted that displacement is not exclusive to Sri Lanka. He challenged to cite any other country which has carried out resettlement faster than Sri Lanka. He revealed that the total number resettled is nearing 100,000. The President has pledged them everything other than the lost lives.
8,643 were resettled in the Vavuniya District today in addition to 6,631 in the Mannar District. The number of families resettled in the Kilinochchi District today was 10,017. It was the first that resettlement was undertaken in the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi Districts today after liberating the North from terrorism. These two Districts were the main administrative towns of the LTTE and these regions were heavily de-mined. As such, the Government experienced an uphill task of removing the land mines.
Material assistance was also given to the resettled civilians. Particularly TNA Parliamentarians Shivanathan Kishore and D. Siddharthan were present on the occasion. The laying of the foundation stone for a tourist resort in the Murukkan area also took place under the patronage of Mr. Rajapaksa. The construction will take under the aegis of the National Lotteries Board. It is planned to complete the construction within two months.
