@mischares Hum...As like "Personal Jesus" from Depeche Mode, the original is also from Jonny Cash, as you know his carrier began first of any other artists we mention. Like "In a manner of Speaking" from Nouvelle Vague, very few persons know that the original is from Tuxedomoon made in 1979. Perhaps im wrong, take care!

@nunitonick Sorry, I phrased that badly, I'm actually telling you that Bonnie Prince Billy (Bill Oldham) wrote the song. Also Hurt was originally written by Trent Reznor (Nine inch Nails). Johnny Cash recorded a set of albums with Rick Rubin called the American Recordings, most of which are covers.
