I know this is terrible but my late father told me that in the '50s LSU used to bring "Mike" into Tiger Stadium in a Roman-era rolling cage to fire the inebriated crowd up. Back then they had a saying: "Poke the tiger and make the crowd roar!" This meant that Mike would be annoyingly but harmlessly poked in the butt repeatedly while caged. He'd roar viciously over and over. The lubricated home crowd would go crazy at Mike's savagery. This was pre-game and then they'd roll him back to his digs!!
