On the Origin of Kelpie

In the Scottish mythology fairy water horses are known and named as Kelpies. The Kelpie is described as a water spirit, having the shape of a horse and a characteristic fishtail. It can happen in dark and foggy nights that the Kelpie appears and every human being, who perceives the water spirit will be magically attracted and disappears forever........
But is this really only a myth? In my opinion there could be some historical truth behind the Kelpie story! Maybe the Kelpie myth can be referred to visits of Phoenician or Carthaginian "Seahorses" in ancient times. And the ships of Carthage with the shape of a seahorse came as raiders to the British Isles.......

Kelpies don't have fishtails. Nor are they good. They are malevolent creatures that eat people. Also Kelpies are Irish. In scotland they are called Each Usige (gaelic for "water horse") Each Usige live primarily in salt water while Kelpies primarily live in freshwater. Both can be distinguished by manes that always soaking wet. Each Usige ca be distinguished by seaweed in their manes.

But both creatures trick humans into mounting them and then drown and eat their foolish victims.

Thank you for this comment. Your remarks show, that you are more expert than I on this topic. In this context one should also mention the "Nokken" of the Norwegian myths.

However, I am convinced that the stories of these water spirits can be referred to historical events. It is known, that Phoenicians or Carthaginians had built ships with the shape of a seahorse. This song is based on the hypothesis, that the northern hemisphere was visited by such ships in ancient times

This was beautifully sung and well played. Very relaxing song. I personally believe in Kelpies and Each Usiges. Mainly because it is in my roots to do so. There are some things we can not explain and even today, there are some tales fairly recent tales of Kelpies.

Many thanks for your comment. I didn't know, that there is a "QueenOfTheKelpies"! However, I have the impression that many fairy tales or mystic creatures could be connected to a realistic background or moreover, to historical events. If you are interested - in my opinion - in Kelpie-like Phoenician seahorses, I could give you an appropriate web address.

Ha ha. If they did exist they certainly wouldn't have a ruler but I can pretend, can't I? I have to agree. One half of me seems to sway towards the logical explanation, another the more colourful one. I would love to see the website please.
