Model of Peter Zumthor's proyect, the thermal baths in Vals, Switzerland. This map is part of a series of entries using the Half Life 2: Episode 2 Engine, in order to show the process of map-making using Valve's tools. This won't be a playable map, just a personal investigation about simulation in architecture.
The Vals stone has very peculiar shades of grey, this meant that creating the correct texture was a long process of trial and error using just some low resolution images found in the web. I had to make some decisions about the fidelity of the map though. The color is still is a bit off (kind of sepia), but the general look is ok. The floor design had to be simplified from the complex and changing patterns of the design, to just a general feel of those big stone slabs. Along with that, the lighting of the interiors went anywhere. It's way too bright and there's little contrast beetween spaces, so i'll have to fix that to get the right atmosphere in the future.
Finally, i've come to realize that the simple volumes that Zumthor made gives a false sense of simplicity in the building. Besides the light and space (wich are extensively documented in architecture books, magazines and films), the stone patterns in walls, ceilings and floors are throughly designed in every tiny detail. Because of that, the model still has a long way to go.
if you have for example made a building, how can you make different textures on the walls inside than outside the building? also, how can you make posters, spray paintings etc on walls? do you have to make a separate wall, or is it some fancy trick i don't know of? please reply. (hope you understand my bad english :D)

You'll have to make a wall out of two thinner brushes, one in each side to put a different texture on each face. The posters, paitings, graffiti and such are decals, there's a tool in hammer's left sidebar thats made specifically for that.
