On Saturday, November 15th, a team from BSPB Svishtov counted approximately 14,000 geese in the Svishtov-Belene Lowland (IBA #BG083). The flock is composed of mainly White-fronted Geese (Anser albifrons), with a few (less than 10 spotted) Graylag Geese (Anser anser) also travelling with the flock. So far this year, no Red-breasted Geese (Branta ruficollis) have been spotted in this IBA, but the team expects a small number of this extremely rare species later in the winter season, based on previous years experience. The BSPB Svishtov team is part of BSPBs wintering goose monitoring efforts, which also monitor populations in IBAs Durankalak, Shabla and the Burgas Lakes.
