I agree with the last comment made. Wynton at the time that he began his stint as a Jazz Messenger was a exceptional musician and he played with all the fire of all of the great trumpet players that prceeded him. I also agree that these days, he seems to very concerned with the history of Jazz but, I'm sure he could play like he did when he was in the Jazz Messengers or, any way he wants, at any time!

Lee Morgan is a close second to Miles in my personal pantheon of trumpeters, but I gotta come to Winton's defense here. sure he seems like not much more than a historian these days, but Art Blakey chose him to be in the Jazz Messengers when he was still a teenager. he had absorbed everything that makes him seem like a historian, and he synthesized it into his own creative voice. the fact that Blakey hand picked him is validation enough. he might not have been Lee Morgan, but he's no phoney.
