An old key, a file to modify the key and a plastic bottle. Recipe for defeating just about every Kwikset® brand lock out there.

That's the very same lock I had on my front door before I knew better by the way.

You might as well leave your house unlocked as a better alternative to locking with Kwikset. A picture is worth a thousand words and video is more. As the video speaks for itself, it really doesn't keep out those who wants to get in, yet if you lock yourself out on the way to get the newspaper in your pajamas, it's still a hassle.

Kwikset Locks are capable of causing just as much hassle while providing next to no security.

Used in demonstration is a single keyed Genuine Kwikset® brand with bittings 53322. The bump key used was an old key cut to 66666 key, which has a valley height of 0.21 inches and the bump hammer is a plastic bottle I had lying around.

Kwikset is probably the most common lock for homes nationwide and not only is it stupidly easy to defeat, the design only allows for 7776 possible keys.

$150 will buy a nice lock like a Schlage Everest Primus, Abloy Protec or BiLock that is not so easily defeated. Why would you skimp out on $150 on your $300,000 house that you pay $30 a month to the alarm company?

To bump, you need a key you can modify or a blank. Kwikset keys are as common as screw drivers and works in every KWIKSET® brand locks, except the new SmartKey which I don't know much about. Sometimes it works the first time, sometimes takes like six tries, but still...

I think it's a worthwhile to have a locksmith install a better lock and beef up the frame.

If you'd rather not pay someone to do it, you can get it online at places like www.bayarealocks.com or eBay...

  • geez, i was just looking for a video on how to install my new kwikset lock and what i find is burglar training on youtube! i suppose i didn't have to watch it.

  • You did yourself a favor watching it. Shouldn't have bought Kwikcrap

  • @UrbexNW

Lock bumping can be used to defeat almost any lock, into the 100 dollar range. Be afraid....be very afraid.

  • @MegaShredda

Abloy Protec is bump proof. Schlage Primus is quite resistant. There are $100+ fashion door hardware, but retail price doesn't determine the quality of lock mechanism itself.

Restricted keys with proper side milling is hard to obtain

  • were did you get the lock at

  • The lock is my old front door lock. You can buy a Kwikscrap or generic KW1 based deadbolt for less than $20 brand new.

  • Buy a great set of bump keys at BumpkeyAz. com.

  • @MegaShredda I would like to see you Bumping my EVVA MCS locks ;)

  • Just to update everyone; Kwikset now sells their locks with a new design that defeats this kind of intrusion. I guess they were embarrassed by how "stupidly simple" this was to break.

Sources: Kwikset website/I just bought one

um...i think you should do a quick search on bumping medeco locks buddy...it has been done many times

  • Look at the main parts of the video...Kwikset opened with plastic bottle...Kwikset company should feel bad

  • Wow all of you boys are so ignorant. Medeco, really? Think about that one more time and decide if all those different angles, depths, and sidebar make that comment as stupid as it is to me. You boys should leave those pesky lock things to the pros.

  • Can't bump Schlage Primus. You would need to get a hold of the correct blank with the correct side milling....good luck with that!

Plus because there is a sidebar, the tension needed for bumping would be very tricky.

  • They are hard to pick, and pretty much bump proof, but they're not secure at all. You can open them with a flathead screwdriver and some muscle. Just keep turning both directions and eventually the cylinder will give. It may take a few minutes but it doesn't make a sound which is spooky.
