Nicolae Covaci of Dragomiresti, Maramures Country , Romania is probably the oldest and the last of the local fiddlers to play in the old style, which is to say unaffected by the popularity of the Petreus Brothers style which defined Maramures music in the late 1960s. In the old style the three string kontra viola and bass accompanied the fiddles and I tried to recreate that here. This is one of the Jewish tunes that Nicolae remembers from playing before WWII when he and his brothers occasionally played in a band with the Shloimovitch family of Jewish musicians from nearby Rozavlea.
