That is a 3:42 ratio.  i have broken 3 GM 7.5 inch rear ends, there junk. 41/12 =3.4166667 rounds up to 3:42.

isnt the differential the thing that allows the vehicle to get in 4wheel drive? my dads truck differentile went out when the
4X4 setting was on (locked up all the tires)

What ur refering to is the transfer case, transfers the vehicle from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive, and vice versa.
