Now considered a mainstay of patriotic music in the United States, "The Liberty Bell" had its beginnings in an operetta which John Philip Sousa was composing for an American vaudeville performer. When the two men could not come to an agreement regarding financial agreements, Sousa was encouraged by his wife as well as a close associate to call it "The Liberty Bell." The march soon became one of the composer's most popular and successful works.
