Here is a Deutsche Welle Digital Radio Mondiale video promoting the Digital Radio Mondiale AM radio system which gives near FM quality radio transmissions in mono and stereo quality via the MW/LW/SW bands over large AM distances at the lowest possible cost(in the event of shortwave this can be transcontinental/international or europewide or targeting specific areas and in the case of mediumwave and longwave can target a whole country or continent) in better quality and reception than outmoded analogue AM on these wavebands and has these advantages;
An immediate improvement in quality and reception over analogue AM,
Ease of use,
You find stations by name not frequency,
There is also the facility for the radio to change frequencies if a station changes over frequencies and/or wavebands during the broadcast(saving the trouble of having to retune;the radio does this all for you and you hardly know about it),
and as well as information about the programme/music etc being broadcast,
multimedia images and text accompanying the programmes can be received(if sent by the broadcasters).

  • Technically it's a great idea. Overall I think it's a terrilble idea. All the analog receivers will be obsolete. Those in poor countries that rely on SW radio the most will hurt the most.

  • @baldbaby2000 All India Radio is doing regular nightly digital radio mondiale shortwave transmissions to Europe from Khampur on 9950kHz in the 31m band, and there are plans to expand DRM onto MW stations over there(and it is steadily gaining acceptance too). As for the receivers you just manufacture and sell affordable low cost mains/battery/12v portable MW/SW/LW radios with the DRM facility built in as a switch to listen in DRM mode and switch the receiver over to it.

  • Why the footprints of these broadcast are only for central Europe?

  • Because that is what DW has intended for it.

  • DW should focus on it's concept and vision rather than technical issues. While DW-TV, English and German radio services are doing relatively good job, other desks, like Ukrainian and Russian are becoming a boring "talking head" for EU press-releases. Once and for all DW should decide what should it be focused upon. Balanced international news, range of opinions and analysis from german and world perspective or just localized EU-propaganda/information tool.

  • DW World is replacing it's analog SW transmissions with Digital Radio Mondiale SW transmissions which give better reception and audio quality on SW transmission and can do the same for the MW/LW bands.

  • The problem is not with technical quality of transmissions but with the content's quality. This is especially relevant for all radio desks, maybe except for English and German in the meantime.

  • Digitalization i'm afraid is speeding up the demise of analogue AM. Digital Radio Mondiale is the future of AM radio and gives better quality/better reception and is a good replacement;who wants to listen to stations that are difficult to hear,swallowed in noise and have poorer fidelity these days? It also makes finding stations easier,retunes if a broadcast changes frequency, and allows timeshifting of your favourite programmes with on demand content/multimedia images and text and more.

  • i hope this will not spell the end of weeding out sw stations, but of course it will. something else on the way out. can't leave nothing alone. half the majic of sw is the hunting out of weak stations
