Just a short video that walks you through some of the basic features of the CR-48 Chromebook. I did not go over opening a terminal, starting SSH, and other cool things, but even the basic features are pretty impressive.

  • People need to keep in mind this CR-48 was merely a pilot program for testing Chrome OS. Google never sold these units, but other companies are indeed releasing chromebooks such as Samsung and Acer. They are decent laptops and recommended for cloud users. I even use various web based programs for coding such as Koding which has some excellent built in FTP functionality and syntax highlighting. Although I will say that the CR-48 has been a fun machine to hack as well and put Linux and BSD on. ;)

  • chrome os ? its good for an smartphone or table pc but not for a notebook that cost 449,00 ! to expensive if it cost 150-250 ok but 449 :O omg :( and chrome os you can get for free but i think linux / ubuntu is a much more better :D

  • @o0NewKidsTV0o I have to agree with you. The price point as of now is not very attractive at all. I'd def pay $200 or so.

  • @pcmgktr u mad bro?

  • @esmith0507 how do I do it? easily. the guy is on YouTube's homepage everyday and his comedy is mediocre. but his target demographic of 12 year olds seems to be a hot market. so congrats to him.

  • This looks like Linux. The only usefulness I could find with this machine is the super fast boot up speed. But with important services/programs that load upon start up, most OS'es will have an amount of start up time. But in the end, I'm a Technician/Developer/Network Admin/Black Hat so I need a fully operational computer that allows me to run PROGRAMS. Not applications.

  • @dellthinker FYI, to make it useful, just hit Ctrl-Alt-T to open up a terminal. it isn't a full blown terminal in normal mode, but it does have an SSH client which works great. So as a web developer, being able to SSH to my VPSes makes it very useful. As long as I can get my VIM, I'm a happy camper.

  • Math Class: Chrome OS - Web = 0

  • Chrome OS should be like an Android for PC -.-

  • @numetheus No disrespect from the geek pun, but how many corporations fully support IPSec? I mean even for my Nokia N8 i have to go through many Linux things to create a secure tunnel that mVPN can understand. OpenVPN is the mostly used atm because of the PPTP standard. Maybe because it's used more, I don't know your jobs net settings. But what if IPSec and or L2TP aren't available for your job. Then what?

  • @dellthinker You can vpn from chromebook; although it is limited to only L2TP/IPSec with Pre Shared Key (PSK). You don't need to run a chrome page for ssh. It has an ssh client built in. Press ctrl-alt-t. You can do it without getting into developer mode. And yeah, I know it's an argument that only nerds would follow; but hey ... I was under the impression you were of the variety. lol

  • @mehdi16011 How would a full Dell laptop help you in the middle of the desert and you have no connectivity to call for help?

  • @numetheus Being the lead sys admin of a large network you think it's okay to just ssh in to any server? No VPN options? After doing a simple google search I found no useful app that allows this without some modifications. And if it's mobility you're looking for I use my Nokia N8, whatever your preference with smartphones there are plenty of solutions that smash this chrome book idea. Sorry dude but you're making arguments that only nerds would agree with.

  • @dellthinker I am the lead admin of a large dot com. Wearing that hat, all I need is ssh and screen. Everything is done through a jump box typically. So if you have ssh what's the problem? This is a very good .... and quick unit to whip out and take care of an issue when on the go. I really don't need a full laptop. 100% of what I need is web and ssh. This thing lasts all day whereas my work issued laptop or even my asus netbook is limited.
