James Kalm is cruising the lower, Lower East Side, when he drops by a gallery he's been intending to visit for months. Kansas is presenting the opening of Michael Berryhill's "Incidental Western" and your reporter is impressed. Constructing his pictures from a mélange of early Modernist and Metaphysical styles representing the nescient phase of Surrealism, Berryhill scrapes and overworks the pictures until the have the luster of scrimshaw. Imagery is a tangle of representational forms verging into abstraction and back again, and a love of the painter's craft, a melodically high keyed palette, and the history of painting is evident. A musical introduction, recorded live under the "Arch" at Washington Square Park, is graciously provided by "Eight Two" http://www.eighttwomusic.com/. Their CD "You're Too Wonderful" is available from Amazone, check it out folks.

Thank you, Mr. Kalm, a wonderful introduction to an interesting painter. I really appreciated your comments about his process and the artists speaking with you.I also would be clutching my drink at my opening if I were being interviewed by you, as lovely as you are. As an artist in the hinterlands your videos are a wonderful resource. many blessings on you!

I like how you showed a little snap shot of each painting (well almost each painting) towards the end. Good for the viewer to get that little summary.
I thought the colors were great. Same with the dry 'gumbily' :) paint brush technique. I liked the brightest most colorful paintings the most. Some were kind of on the dull tip. Michael seemed like a nice chap but he was really nervous. A very sensitive guy. He could work on his social skills a bit. Who am I to talk : \
