The graviton isn't so much the missing piece of the Standard Model as it is the missing piece of a Theory of Everything. The Higgs Boson is theorized under the SM. But the SM itself, doesn't even try to incorporate gravity. The discovery of a graviton would form the Theory of Everything (all four forces), and would toss out the SM (while incorporating parts of it).
