This Alco started on The Maine Central as 557. Then was ran on the Wolfboro Railroad as 101. The early 80s it was the Goodwin Railroad then Bought by John Clement for the Winnipesaukee Railroad till 1990. the railroad switched hands to the Hobo railroad which still runs the line to day. The RS3 was sold to Naugatuck Railroad Museaum in the mid 90s. When in transfer the 557 was left with its water in the cooling system and froze up and from what heard there was alot of damage was done.

Sorry about the video quality this came from a very old VHS tape.

  • As of right now shes sitting in Chase yard in Waterbury, CT. She needs alot of engine work and she has a few electrical problems. And the last time she was started was about ten years ago.

  • is it still owned by Naugatuck. and is there any future plans for it?

  • 557 sat in Waterville yard for the longest time back in the 70's. Great video! Nice music choice also. 5* & in my faves. Thanks for showing me this. Hopefully she'll get a rebuilt diesel in her belly some day.

  • I rember being a kid and my father taking me done to Northfield were i got to start her up. I would love to see her running again first cab i ever rode in. Alco RS 3 with the 244 prime mover is my favorite Locomotive

  • Yeah, 557 isn't "dead", it's just in long term storage awaiting it's return to glory again. Personally it's my favorite loco at the Naugy, and one of the reasons I volunteer there. I hope to be one of the ones to resurrect it.

  • Yes it is still owned by the Naugatuck Railroad. There is a future for her but it will be many years from now. The locomotives that are getting overhauled before it are Ex. B&M 1732, Ex. B&M 1508 (RS3) And possibly Ex. New Haven 2525 (U25B). The plans are to do a compleate overhaul on her and put her back into MEC colors.

  • Oh yeah!

  • I Dont give a shit about quality as long as you got the train & you can see it Im happy

  • Great editing job too BTW. Looks nice & professional.
