To best track a 'fast' moving target we need a generous field of view on the vision system and fast camera motion control. Drifter has neither. The camera's horizontal FOV is roughly 45 degrees, or about one quarter of the FOV that humans have available. The camera's tilt servo performance isn't too bad but the horizontal pan motion is obtained only by steering the front robot axle.

Objects in motion near the camera leave the FOV very quickly. With Drifter's high frame rate (30fps) it will often capture at least one or two frames of the target as it quickly enters and leaves FOV. With two captured frames Drifter can make a pretty good guess about where to look next for the ball.
