Hotel Glória, one of Rio de Janeiro's best-known landmarks and the first luxury hotel ever built in Brazil, is heading towards a rebirth as Glória Palace. Hotel Glória has been built in neoclassical style for the 1922 celebrations of the centennial of Brazilian independence. Hotel Glória has become known in the country's hotel industry scene via a project by the French architect Jean Gire, who also designed the Copacabana Palace. The hotel has been purchased in 2008 by Eike Batista's (EBX). According to EBX, the façade will look more like the original and the hotel will have 231 rooms. One part of the property will be used as EBX-headquarters.

The hotel is closed in October 2008 and is now undergoing a massive restoration and renovation. Reopening is expected for the end of 2011. Enviro Challenge has carried out a pre-demolition scan before the partial demolition takes place. The demolition concerns the following parts :

swimming pool & terrace north side;
swimming pool & terrace south side;
theatre;
atrium;
elevator shafts new building;
upper floors new building;
asbestos-containing roof old part; and
"transformator rooms" old part.
