He called her a Mudblood because he was humiliated that she had come to his rescue when James was bullying him. He said something he really didn't mean and it resulted in the loss of the friendship he valued most. Before I read Deathly Hallows I was okay with Severus, but after Deathly Hallows I found extreme respect for him.
Everything he'd ever done was for Lily, and I think that's just beautiful.

Smeagol, while his story was tragic, in the end didn't actually willingly contribute to the downfall of Sauron/Mordor. Snape had made it so he looked like to be not only of Voldemort's favorite but that he was the master of the Elderwand, he also made sure Harry recieved the sword of Gryffindor. Snape also devoted himself to Harry's safety and Dumbledore's will, he is much more noble then Smeagol ever was.
