BALCONYTV DUBLIN 18/11/08
PRESENTED BY TOM MILLETT
For centuries, Ireland was ruled by High Kings. As their reign came to an end, their deeds and stories merged into the world of legend and myth and the High Kings of Ireland were no more except in story, music and song. Until now. Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden, renowned vocalists and musicians, have come together to create the most exciting Irish ballad group to emerge since The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem electrified the worldwide folk revival of the 1960s.

Highly acclaimed composer and musical director David Downes (CELTIC WOMAN) brings intricate harmonies and driving rhythms to THE HIGH KINGS. songbook, giving it a freshness and sparkle that is modern and exciting, without ever sacrificing the traditional melodies and lyrics. The songs themselves reflect a wide range of moods: the rousing Rocky Road to Dublin, the haunting strains of The Parting Glass, the irresistible Wild Rover and the stunning Fields of Glory.

  • @ThatOneCoolBro It's common to put interjections between the lines of the chorus in this song. They usually go: ...the small free birds fly [interjection: "Oh, baby, watch the free birds fly"], our love was on the wing ["Sinn Fein"], we had dreams and songs to sing ["the I.R.A."].

Watch the Dubliners version of this song from the 1990s with Paddy Reilly singing the lead (it's up on YouTube) and you'll hear the audience sing these things between the lines of the chorus.

  • I know why this song sounds familiar, the Drop Kick Murphy's did it. I like this version much better.

  • @ThatOneCoolBro Ah, I see now. I didn't notice that before...yeah, it sounds like he's repeating part of that line--"yeah, where once we watched the free birds fly," or something like that. Maybe he was just trying to keep their energy up for their big finish. If you watch the guy on the right with the guitar, it looks like he's doing something similar, trying to really get into that last chorus. :)

  • @Procrastimaster Oh sorry, I meant 4:37. He definitely says something.

  • @ThatOneCoolBro I didn't see any whispering at that moment, but that part of the chorus does go "Low lie the fields of Athenry, where once we watched the small, free birds fly..."

  • What is the guy on the left whispering at 3:37?

"Where once we watched the free birds"?

  • @wlftone I feel the same, its more like the old videos of the Dubliners, more of the good stuff.

  • Erin go bragh!

  • @DEATHMAJOR Go Colorado! Yeah not too much hype about them here, but I for one love them!
