Composed by Ben Tucker. Recorded by Dave Bailey Quintet on October 6, 1961, six weeks ahead of Herbie Mann's recording at the Village Gate.

Released on Two Feet in the Gutter (Epic BA 17021) in 1961. Personnel: Frank Haynes (ts), Bill Hardman (t), Billy Gardner (p), Ben Tucker (b), Dave Bailey (d). Big thanks to Roel "Snowybowie" Vos for audio support.

The first vocal version was recorded by Mel Tormé in September 1962 on Atlantic (words by Bob Dorough). Issued as a single, it peaked at # 13 UK and # 35 US early the following year. Enjoy !

  • Hmmm. I thought this was composed by Bob Dorough (and originally recorded by him)?

  • @hotfish2009 first popularized by Herbie Mann with Tucker on bass. Tucker then got Dorough to write lyrics for it...

  • yes, Frank Haynes was awesome!

  • 3:15 Pink Panther!

  • Ah, Frank Haynes on tenor. What a nice big warm tone. Too bad he didn't stick around very long. Thanks for posting. Haynes can also be heard in excellent form on Grant Green's "Green Blues" album.
