December 10, 2011 - A dam on the river Elwha in the US state of Washington is being taken down after it caused an ecological imbalance in the region.

Following its construction there was a severe decline in the fish population, a major resource for the local economy, with the number of salmon dropping from 400,000 to just 3,000.

After decades of protests, the controversial dam is on its way out, and one of the world's largest ecological restoration projects is under way.

Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from the site of the dam.

  • Good news!

  • NIce..I am sure there was financial advantage to the corporations running this dam, to destroy it...Finally corporate greed helps the environment..progress...

  • Will (the government) let/allow people to use micro-hydro to power their homes in this river -- it has no impact on the fish and barely slows a river. Yet I suspect they won't allow it -- i.e. they'll react violently to it.
