  • I do believe that would be a mountain type. But it dosent really matter.

    Love the vid :D

  • No harm in stating the correct nickname for a loco of this wheel arrangement, just for the sake of factual accuracy. I love the shrieking sound of those French whistles!

  • Actually I think it´s not the biggest steam engine in Europe, the biggest one is probably our 4-8-4 or 2-4-2 (as you prefer) RENFE´s Confederation with a total length of 17480 mm, while Pacific´s length is 13665mm. Anyways, I don´t know a lot about German steamers, but they have some really big steam engines, so I can´t tell you if german locomotives go beyond all of us! =P

  • That whistle sounds like something a little girl would have on her tricycle

  • Pacific 241 whistles like : ,, French fries anyone ??? :D''

  • I love the railways over there but IMHO the pitch of the whistle on your steamers is very high. Gets your attention though. Do/did you have any articulate locomotives?

  • This locomotive is large but NOT the largest still in use in Europe. There are larger steam locomotives in Russia, and at least one German contender. In addition the loco mentioned here is a 4-8-2 using the British wheel classification, a 2-4-1 using the French system, and a 2-D-1 using the German system. This locomotive is NOT a Pacific. (A "Pacific" type has the 4-6-2 / 2-3-1 / 2-C-1 wheel arrangement) It is a "Mountain" type, but with large driving wheels for express work.

  • @SteamMad6024 2-4-1 is the European classification

  • @grandpagscout The Wheel Arrangment is 4-8-2 not 2-4-1.

  • @tyrerman: I think he meant that this is the biggest loco still running in Europe.

  • nice vid, but teh biggest locomotive in europe was the ausrian 214 series, built in Austria, and later in Romania. In austria it was classified as series 12, and in Romania series 142. The locomotive you filmed is a 2-4-1 axle arrangement, probably used for freight trains or mountain passanger trains

  • was not the Beyer Garratt from the UK bigger???
