Starring Sid Cogswell, Denise Costard, Tanar Repchull, Fishy Neil, Erin Gauthier plus many more..."Rumor has it that at one time, if you took a mentally ill person to the NS Hospital and they were admitted, you would receive a $50 reward. Some people even claimed that you got $50 Bucks and a Toaster. Enough, Sid figures, time to sign himself in to "get some money for smokes".

We're taking the myth to the small screen! Based in the North End Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, otherwise known as "The Dark Side", $50 Bucks and a Toaster follows the manic adventures of a group of psychiatric patients. They disintegrate into a hilarious state of anarchy every time they get together. They can't help it, they're nuts! Fishy: totally bipolar with recurrent delusions of a religious nature i.e. thinks he's the Son of God and that he owns any and all unattended cars. He's got frequent flyer cards from the NS Hospital, and local jail. Sid: psychosis not otherwise specified or just plainly misunderstood. The psychiatrists don't even know what he has other than life trapped in a permanent LSD flashback. Denise: the Mayor's psychotic daughter, a Chronic who switches personalities every time she sparks up. Erin: our favorite Obsessive Compulsive, always slowing things by doing a 25 (or more) step check of the stove and anything else that she's obsessing over before she and the guys can even leave the house. Darrel: our man on wheels, legal to drive, the man with a multitude of facial expressions. We think he's the sanest one! Tanar: were not quite sure what he has, other than doing all the juggling to hold things together, until eventually he drops the first ball and things go all to hell. More laughs than a Schizophrenic has delusions. Get ready, double up on your anti-psychotics, you don't want to miss this one!
Check out the pilot! Denise escapes the NS with Sid and is presumed kidnapped. Watch the boys running around town to find her after they've "dumped" her only to find that a $5000 reward is offered for her safe return. She cooks for Fishy and adds in her own special ingredients resulting in Fishy developing a problem with "Purple Spiders"! Hookers, cops, and a great escape liven things up.
In the second episode we find Sid, paranoid that he doesn't seem paranoid enough to get disability cheques, making a visit to the welfare office in an "altered" state. A car gets stolen, Sid and Fishy pick up some of their friends and end up hiding from the cops at the "Gentleman's Club". Where the series goes from there could be in any number of directions limited only by a demented imagination as influenced by his friends and personal experiences on both sides of the mental-health fence. Sid has spent time as a mental health professional and is a mental health consumer.
