  • i think people miss the fact that picking with emphasis should be down to the notes your using, which notes you wish to stress etc for harmonic colouring. this means that depending on your phrase/run etc your picking should always be shifting, much like this video shows, too many people stick to alternating picking because electric guitar in rock has moved so far away from dynamics between notes. Any acoustic musician will tell you how important emphasis on specific notes are

  • There are some Manouche players out there who play these two downstrokes in a row almost as fast as McLaughlin or Meola play their alternate stuff. It is unbelievable but I found out by slowing down some videos. Check out Stochelo Rosenberg for instance.

  • no what I was saying is that it's not just useful in th gypsy jazz style, it can be made to work for you in other styles as well

  • you can play it like you want. But there are some rules i think, if you want to sound like...... then you should..... i think it depends on myself. HOW do i want to sound like if i want to play like. Or am i wrong?

  • although django also played in the mainstream bop idiom and on an amplified electric guitar towards the end of his life/career. I'm guessing he used (maybe a slight variation on) the same technique.

  • ya it's really hard.. if it makes u feel better, most people who play with this technique have a hard time playing alternate picking... it goes both ways

  • i am a rock guitarist who learnt alt picking from paul gilbert and its really hard to play this style man a totally different approach needs a lot of practice for the gypsy picking legato dynamics

  • it´s true but you will never get the gypsy sound you need. Django used to play more downstrokes then upstrokes. It´s necessary for sounding loud and give emphasis. But it´s only useful if you want to play this style

  • i find it more comfortable to cross pick. v ^ v ^ v ^
