Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father was a miller who wanted the boy to follow a learned profession, but Rembrandt left the University of Leiden to study painting. His early work was devoted to showing the lines, light and shade, and color of the people he saw about him. He was influenced by the work of Caravaggio and was fascinated by the work of many other Italian artists. When Rembrandt became established as a painter, he began to teach and continued teaching art throughout his life.

Well, not really. I've seen the musical about his life, and it's pronounced in an other way. I'm Dutch myself, and I live in the Netherlands (=Holland).
Just check the vid "Regio première Rembrandt de Musical", then you can hear the narrator speak his name (pronounced on the Dutch way)in the first line: "Iedereen weet wel dat Rembrandt van Rijn de schilder is van De Nachtwacht, maar veel verder komen de meeste mensen niet.."

It may be pronounced that way in The States, but in the Netherlands, his homeland, it's not pronounced that way...

very good summary of his paitings and historical facts that lead to Caravaggio's influece in Netherland artists. The musical background. however, ditracts some; perhaps a short comment on each work of art would be more didactic. albeit a more work for you. Thanks for sharing.
