A "smile" to a chimpanzee means fear. This means when you see chimps smiling on post cards, posters or TV it means the animal is scared. Trainers either scare the animal or train it by beating the animal into submission and then forces it to do unnatural things such a smiling.

  • funny. i've seen some scared chimps before and they weren't smiling.

  • what were they doing?

  • a smile of a chimpanzee can also expres joy.

  • Many experts agree that a chimapnzees smile means fear, when they are most happy their bottom lips relaxes and thats the way I know they are pleased. However, every chimp is different so while that may be the majority i still have to acknowledge that some chimps might smile and are happy, so instead of saying in teh video FACT- chimpanzees only smile when scared i should ahve said chimpanzees usually smile when scraed. Thnaks for watching! and thanks for the input Lauren

  • Your video is great!

Don't dress up the chimps (and other animals).

I will show this video to my friends of Jane Goodall Institute in the Netherlands.

  • Good vid.

  • what's wrong with the pictures is that chimps aren't supposed to pose unnatural behavors and they were smiling. obviously they're scared. Just imagine living a life of fear. isn't that horrible?

  • This is a very good vedio. Frankly I find nothing wrong with these pictures!

  • I agree with you that all the chimpanzees you see in the media smile because of intimidation, fear. I have heard horrible stories about the entertainment industry.

  • That is an odd story to me. I too have worked with chimps and they smiled when they were scared. I have also spoken with ex trainers who will say the same thing. However, there are excpeptions to every story so thank you for sharing that with me.
