Why give a Laptop? See http://laptop.org and http://laptop.org/givemany

Substitute the word Laptop, with the word Education, and you have much of the answer. XOs make it possible to collaborate, learn, teach, and publish at no cost. They inspire new forms of learning, and attention to education. And the provide access to digital texts in places too remote to send and update physical books in a cost-effective way.

  • how much does it "cost" for a laptop And no colour comn :P

meh it still induces the kids into learning

  • around $200, the cost of production.

  • OLPC, they need an education. For thousands of years, billions of humans lived comfortably with no education. The money from these laptops can build fields for the kids to grow their own food. Then they have food for the rest of their life. It can also build them a library, and we can all donate books (no money needed there!), and the kids can get an education from those. OLPC, please just shut down and learn how to really love and care.

  • For thousands of years people have built fields and grown their own food. Our world is changing rapidly and people everywhere need to work together to address our growing problems. That requires shared knowledge, communication, and yes, devoting time in each life to education.

And donating + shipping print books isn't free...

  • i wish i had one i have been interested in programing sing i was 8 or 9 so that would be about four year

  • that's awesome, chosenone. you should write to one of the olpc mailing lists, there may be a user group near you. the user group in Houston is mainly 8-13 yr old children.

  • Shocked! I was shocked by the comments that spoke disparagingly of children using computers.

Information and education are two of the greatest social equalizers known.

By offering children and adults unlimited information and world class education, both of which are available via the Internet, we can save peoples' lives.

A laptop with an Internet connection given to the poor will be a life changing contribution for recipients.

  • the OS uses the sugar desktop environment its kinda different...

  • has olpc considered changing the XO keyboard to plastic keys, since kids tend to tear the rubber membrane keys by picking at them?

  • @jaylgarrison -- Did your teachers teach you about the library? computers change nothing with regard to content. Software is outdated before it reaches a user, and the internet is full of lies, and rather incomplete. Does a child in Ethopia need the specifics of late 20th century american history? Does this project teach use of computers or how to learn? Books, discussion, writing, analysis, has worked for thousands of years. It's low tech, and for many that's appropriate technology.

  • @shanna9650 Are you serious? When I was going to school our history books contained nothing about the Vietnam War (conflict), the fight for civil rights, or the assassinations of Kennedy or Martn Luther King, Jr. Almost every reference book is outdated before it even hits the printing press. Take planting crops... The climates have changed, our soil has changed, the pests that threaten crops have changed... There are limitless changes that will take place in our lifetimes.

  • wow i feel selfish

  • one laptop per child .... Education is very important for humanity....

es increible pensar k si cada ciudadano del mundo fuese propietario de una Laptop Xo no seria necesario utilixar internet para chatear
