@Jcahalane Yeah, it just felt natural that way. I play a lot of fingerstyle guitar (check my channel for examples), so maybe that had something to do with it.

I do need more practice, this was recorded less than a week after I got a bass, so any sloppiness is probably due to lack of practice rather than poor right hand technique. My right hand technique is a little weird looking though, but I'll work on it.

@spaceace1337 His way of playing is fine, it's called the floating thumb method.

pretty bad. try putting ur thumb on the pick up and strum with your index and middle fingur
