Yes, it rhymes regardless. However, by changing the spelling, there's a little more emphasis on the fact that the university was built on top of Leland Stanford's horse farm and; hence, the association with "turd" from horse dung. This is just a guess, but it makes sense.

I'm not a fan of either team, totally just curiosity, why do Cal fans call Stanford "Stanfurd"? I fail to see how this is really all that insulting? Again, not trying to diss Cal's diss on Stanford, completely just curious
