@indiatree No, because if that's the case, Orser would have beaten Boitano at the Olympics in Calgary that year. The artistic program broke ties starting at the 1990 or 1991 World Championships, I believe.

@lookscudkill: I thinks she should have won in Calgary, but not here. In terms of "most advanced/up to date tech ability," let's not forget Ito, who was miles ahead of Manley technically; and here at Worlds, Manley screwed up on the combo in the short, and it was the easiest combo of the competition.

@owemunar I thought that the technical mark broke any ties in the short program, but the artistic mark broke any ties in the long program.

Even though she had a load of mistakes on the jumps, I still felt that it was enough to overtake Katarina.
-
@indiatree Actually, in 1988, technical merit broke the ties. Hence why Boitano beat Orser at the Olympics in 1988.

She did triple Lutz, triple toe loop, triple Salchow, and a triple loop with a two footed landing (which under the rules back then was not given any credit). No triples in combination. You would give her probably .2 higher in technical marks over Witt. But Witt's Carmen, in terms of setting a mood artistically, would probably get .2 higher than Manley for artistic marks especially from the European judges. So, there is a case for Witt placing higher since the artistic marks broke any ties.

This should have got her the Gold, no doubt about it. Not as good as her fab skate in Calgary but definitely enough to win.

I agree with you metsdudenj, she was the winner in both of these competitions !

In 1988 olympics, she finished third in the SP.
she deserved the gold in both those competitions

She was the real winner here and in the 1988 Calgary Olympics. The most complete and advanced/up-to-date in technical ability.
