Thats a rediculous idea. A 238 shouldn't go much higher then 2400 rpm regardless of how long it took to start, especially when its not yet at operating temperature. A short sniff of ether wouldn't have hurt it any but if you use it too often diesels (Detroits especially) rely on it to start every time.

@farmboy120 detroit diesel and GM were the same company, dietroit was the 2 stroke division of general motors, thats why DD's were called "jimmys, gemmys, cnat think of other names

It was probably in the low to mid 50's (~12c) this day. But the main issue was the fuel. This fuel had been in the tanks for who knows how long, probably several years. She fires right up now days!
