@polzowatel watch who you are calling an idiot buddy. I'm a physics major. Not some 2 bit internet junkie troll. And the tritium itself is not capable of glowing in the visible light range.
I bought some of these about 5 years ago, and they are way dimmer now. The blue ones, especially, are barely visible even with fully dark-adapted eyes.
The problem is not the tritium decay, but the use of inferior quality phosphors which degrade with time. This was a big problem on the early radium clock/watch dials. The radium has a thousands of years half-life and is very dangerous, but the phosphors degrade after 10 years and stop glowing, hiding the danger.
There are also spherical tritium vials with 100x more tritium hence the light output. I ordered something called "tritium torch", can't wait for it co come in :-)
@AtomicEmporium I saw some Sodium Iodide on ebay... you might want to check there, I believe it was a granular 50gram sample around 10$ or so... still pretty affordable. They have a 21 year old min. age limit so I can't get any but I would for sure like to see the results if you decide to go ahead with it.
@gvsfgdf physics major...meaning that deals with physics not really to much into elements and such
