The inspiration for this video and song came from an incredible horse named Petey. He has truly touched my heart and changed my life forever.

Petey is a PreMarin (Pregnant Mare Urine) colt. He was rescued from a PMU farm in Canada when he was 3 months old. I first met him at the Ray of Light Farm in CT, when he was a yearling. It was shocking to learn about the devastation imposed upon the lives of the mares used to make this drug and on their innocent foals.

Pregnant mares used for Premarin production are often confined to narrow tie stalls where they cannot turn or lie down for weeks at a time without release for exercise. This chronic lack of exercise can cause severe swelling of the legs, breakdown of the hoof structure and sets the stage for colic. They are harnessed to urine collection bags six months a year. The mares may be impregnated for production for 8 to 9 years. At the end of their use, they are sent to slaughter. The PMU grade (mixed breed) foals, innocent by-products of this industry, have almost no chance to find homes as sport horses, working horses or pets. At two to five months old, the foals are taken from their mothers and sent to auctions where they ultimately end up in the slaughterhouse.

When I met Petey, I was deeply moved by his calm presence and unique beauty. His amazing spirit compelled me to honor him and others like him with the words and music to "Hear the Whisper." I hope you enjoy the story, as Petey truly helped me find the Ray of Light that lives within us all.

The only way we can stop this atrocious treatment of mares and foals like Petey is to squelch the demand for the product. Thankfully, the number of PMU farms has been decreasing. Currently, there are around 37,000 broodmares on 422 PMU farms and ranches in Canada and the US. However, foals are still sold at auction by the hundreds to feedlot operators, who then send them to slaughter for European and Asian meat markets.

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1. View the entire video! I wanted to create a way to support the work being done to close down PMU farms on behalf of foals like Petey. The owner of one PMU farm in Canada has agreed to close down this year if enough money can be raised. Horse whisperer Anna Twinney is leading in this effort, along with the Equine Angels Rescue Sanctuary, Ray of Light Farm and the Equine Voices Rescue & Santuary. Please take the time to offer your support to any of these amazing groups. Their websites are listed at the end of this presentation.

2. Do not use any product made from Pregnant Mares Urine. The synthetic alternatives are safe, reliable and very effective. Most importantly, there are no animals suffering from its production. If you are a woman being prescribed "Premarin" which is manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst as an estrogen replacement, ask your doctor about synthetic alternatives such as: Cenestin by Duramed, Climara by Berlex, Estrace by Mead/Johnson, Estratab by Solvay, Ogen by Upjohn, Ortho-Est by Ortho-Mcneil, Provera by Upjohn, Estinyl by Sherin, Estradrem by Ciba. All of these products are made from plant materials such as soy, yams and other vegetable sources.

3. Help educate others about the drug Premarin. SHARE this video on your FB profile.

4. In addition to financial donations, you can sponsor, foster and adopt! Together, we can make a difference!

Thank you.
