What is a HEMI? Where does the name come from, and how is this engine different than other engines? This video explains the principles of a hemispherical engine; why it exists and how it differs from other cylinder head variations.

  • ...I'm not a car but, but the old original hemi designs generated massive amounts of horsepower that aren't even close to matched in today's engines... However they also used too much fuel at a time to generate this power hence the bad gas mileage and they weren't very clean. So idk why your saying the new designs are much more powerful and blah blah.

  • @LCaesars92AAA04 I'm not a car either. But HEMI technology is far outmatched by what's on the market today.

  • How can a Hemi head have less surface area than a flat head?

  • @bloximonkey It has more surface area, but it also has more volume. A sphere is the perfect three dimensional object if you're looking for a high volume to surface area ratio. The Hemi style takes advantage of this idea. Combustion chambers want large amount of volume, with low surface area to reduce power lost as heat. Soda cans take the same principle, so less aluminum is required to sell you 12 ounces of drink.

  • @EngineeringExplained Why does Mopar continue to sell Hemi engines if the pentroof cylinder head is a more thermodynamically-advanced design? Because simply plastering "Hemi" on the car sells to people?

  • @grimsrudjk Yes, that's exactly why. HEMI sounds cool, I guess, and no one knows what it means, they just associate it with power, so yeah, it's just a selling point.

  • @EngineeringExplained

I used to think the same thing, having only had a quick intro to the different type of cylinder heads.

And as an aspiring engineer i am extremely excited to have stumbled upon your channel!

    Thanks for the vids!

  • :( stupid cafe standards!! I hope they don't !!!!

  • @coolmikey408 I think they will go away eventually. With efficiency the name of the game in the automotive industry, eventually they will be phased out completely. Though they're still used in NASCAR, which to me seems silly, but as you mentioned, it's the heritage of the sport.

  • Thanks man, as far as Chevrolet and dodge go do you think they rid of them? IMO it's there heritage ! And I think chevy made a 32 valve LS6 for the c4 vette!
