"The Sand Pebbles" is a 1966 movie starring Steve McQueen, Candice Bergen, and many other famous stars.

Movie Plot (Wikipedia excerpt):
In 1926, Machinist's Mate 1st Class Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) transfers from the Asiatic Fleet flagship to the Yangtze River Patrol gunboat USS San Pablo (the ship is nicknamed the "Sand Pebble" and its sailors refer to themselves as the "Sand Pebbles"). However, life aboard a gunboat is very different from that on a flagship. The gunboat has a labor system — condoned by the officers — wherein coolies do all of the manual work, leaving the sailors free for combat drills and idle bickering. Because he likes to work taking care of the ship's engines, Holman bucks the system. Although he becomes close friends with one seasoned and sensitive seaman, Frenchy (Richard Attenborough), most of the other crewmen see Holman as a Jonah (or a jinx). Holman's desire to work on the engines also antagonizes the ship's coolie laborers whose "rice bowl" (source of income) is derived from doing the work that the sailors would normally do.

  • @mgwilliams1000 I did not know that Richard Crenna had served in the Navy? and that he was an engineman..And that Steve McQueen had served in the Marines..No wonder i like this movie so much I myself was an engineman in the Navy.

    best wishes shipmate.

  • My favorite film composer, Jerry Goldsmith. Rest in peace, maestro.

  • Can you post a tutorial for this piano arrangement? Thanks!

  • Thank you for posting this. A truly beautiful piece of music from a great film which I have always loved.

  • @mgwilliams1000 -thank you sir for the bit of info you wrote. I loved this film very much for so many reasons and one of the reason is the portrayal of Steve McQueen. He fits very well to act as a sailor because of his rugged character . He should have made an Oscar for this film.

  • People forget that this Great Epic was based on a book written by a true sailor... Richard Crenna.. an actual Navy engineman. Told from stories he had heard from others as he served in China long after this. Great sea stories that I myself remember from my 30 year service.

  • Demonstrates the true beauty of music that is incomparable to anything else.

  • McQueen was a Marine before becoming an actor. So his military bearing in the role of Jake Holman came naturally from his experience and training as a Marine. This was his only Oscar nomination. And yes, he like to let his face do the talking in lieu of a lot of dialogue. That added to his "cool" reputation. This is one of my alltime favorite movies. From an old romantic Coastie...

  • Candice Bergen seems to have a resemblance to Mc Queens ex wife - Ali Mc Graw. Love this movie. From an old romantic salt.

  • When life meant something..thank you god, for the experience
